Is AI Search Replacing Google for Local Business Discovery?

Not entirely, but the split is real and growing. A meaningful share of people who used to type "best plumber near me" into Google now ask the same question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's own AI Overviews — and the answer they get back is a short, confident list, not ten blue links they have to click through and compare themselves.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

A traditional search result is a menu — the customer still does the comparing. An AI answer is closer to a recommendation from a friend: it names two or three options and the customer often just picks one, especially for a decision that doesn't feel high-stakes enough to research further. Being left off that short list isn't like ranking #8 on Google, where a scroll still finds you — it's closer to not existing for that customer at all.

The two channels aren't run by the same rules

Traditional SEO rewards keyword-matched pages, backlinks, and technical crawlability. AI answer engines lean more on structured facts (schema, consistent NAP data), how often a business is mentioned across the web in a context that reads as a genuine recommendation, and — for the engines that browse live — what's actually on the page right now. A site that's well-optimized for classic Google search is a good start, but it doesn't automatically mean an AI system trusts it enough to name it.

This isn't a reason to abandon Google

Google Search, Google Business Profile, and traditional local SEO still drive real traffic and still matter — this is additive, not a replacement to plan around yet. The businesses getting hurt aren't the ones with weak traditional SEO; they're the ones who have traditional SEO handled and haven't noticed a second channel opened up alongside it with different rules.

How to tell where you actually stand

The honest way to know isn't to guess based on how well you rank on Google — it's to ask the AI tools the exact questions a customer would ask and see what comes back. Rankings on one channel don't predict standing on the other.
