SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking well in a list of links on a search results page. AEO (answer engine optimization, sometimes called GEO for generative engine optimization) is about being the business an AI tool actually names, by name, when it answers a question directly — with no list of links for the customer to click through at all.
The core difference: a list of links vs. a single answer
Traditional search gives someone ten blue links and lets them decide who to click. Ranking #1 or #3 still means competing for attention. An AI answer engine collapses that into a short, conversational answer that names a handful of businesses (sometimes just one) directly. If you're not in that short list, you don't get a lower-ranked link — you get left out of the answer entirely.
What carries over from SEO
A lot of AEO fundamentals are SEO fundamentals: a fast, readable website; accurate, consistent business information; genuine reviews; and being mentioned on other credible sites. AI answer engines lean on many of the same trust signals search engines have used for years, so businesses with decent SEO groundwork already have a head start.
What's actually different
- Format matters more. AI tools favor content that reads like a direct answer to a question, not content built around ranking for a keyword phrase.
- Being quotable beats being clickable. A clear, self-contained sentence or paragraph that fully answers a question is more useful to an AI summarizer than a page designed to keep someone scrolling and clicking.
- There's no "page two." In classic search, you can rank #8 and still get some traffic. In an AI answer, you're either named or you're not — there's much less of a long tail.
- Independent mentions matter even more. Because AI tools often cross-check what your own site says against what other sources say, third-party confirmation carries extra weight.
Why it matters now
More people are starting their search for a local business inside a chat tool instead of a traditional search box — asking for a direct recommendation instead of a list to sort through themselves. That shift doesn't replace the need for good SEO; it adds a second, stricter test on top of it: not just "can they find you," but "will the AI say your name."
